It is 10th Feb 2012 - 1:25 am! About half an hour ago, there was an earthquake tremor! The doors and doorposts with windows rattled and began shaking. I was sitting on my sofa, watching news and also checking my mail. Suddenly this shook me and I thought my dog was trying to disturb me and I opened the main door of the house. But Brownie the dog was barking out (as he is our watchdog), and others in the family were sleeping! But they soon woke up and my son asked me if it was an earthquake! I said, Yes, it was!
Our house is located on a fault known as Rajpur Fault! We live in Kishenpur, Rajpur Suburb of Dehra Dun! My thoughts went back to 20th Oct 1991 when there was a massive earthquake here in our region! Its epicentre was in Agora village in District Uttarkashi. I was one of those that immediately went to survey the area and was greatly moved by the devastation it caused in Uttarkashi district in particular and in the whole of Garhwal region in general. My native village too was not untouched by the impact of this devastating earthquake then! We did some relief work in Uttarkashi.
Another devastating earthquake took place in 1993 in Latur, Maharashtra. Again, there was a great loss of property, livestock and human lives! We were able to help again in the calamity.
1999 March saw another earthquake in Chamoli, and my village too was affected badly! We were able to help the 6 village communities again with relief and rehabilitation! As a result, people requested us to help their children with better education and start some community based project for them.
2001 January saw another earthquake in Gujrat. The epicentre was at Anjar, Kutch. Many towns and cities were raised to ground by this earthquake! Many lives were lost! We again tried to help the community at Anjar and helped the children of earthquake victims in Ahmedabad with educational aid for 5 years!
2004 December was another horrifying time when Andaman Islands experienced a devastating Tsunami and subsequent earthquake! We were again there to help some of the people and tried to help hundreds of children with their school uniforms, etc.
And we keep hearing of the tsunamis and earthquakes all over - in Japan, Haiti, China, Pakistan, etc. Tonight's experience took me to the words of Jesus, "In the last days, there will be earthquakes..." and 20th as well as this 21st century has seen the maximum number of natural calamities - leave alone the man-made calamities! Jesus said, When you see these things taking place, lift up your heads and wait for your deliverance and redemption!
I believe, we are living in the last days and we need to heed the Word of God and live accordingly! We never know when the Lord will come: perhaps tonight! So let's prepare our hearts, souls, minds and bodies for His return!
